The Etruscans: The Greeks’ and Romans’ “Mysterious” Neighbors

The Etruscans are not as well-known as other ancient peoples of the Mediterranean, like the Greeks and the Romans, but they definitely should be! In fact, you might be surprised to find out that the Romans borrowed a great deal from them, finding lots of inspiration in the success of these central Italian neighbors. Etruscan engineering and urban planning were innovative, and Etruscan art was rich and colorful, a true joy to look at. Fortunately, though they didn’t leave behind many written records, they left behind several paintings and sculptures that show how they lived. Traces of them infuse the culture, cuisine, and people of Tuscany even today, giving the region its unique charm and flavour.
